 2018 Preview

Oxford completed the 2017 season with a 12-1 record. The Yellow Jackets cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Oxford captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Oxford lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Clay-Chalkville team by a score of 31-15.

The Yellow Jackets won as many games as in any season since 2011.

The defense was very stingy last season as Oxford ranked 3rd in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 7.6 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Yellow Jackets have gone 22-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Oxford has gone a combined 65-29. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 6A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Oxford has managed to compile a record of 176-93. Their 65.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 6A and 59th in the AHSAA. The Yellow Jackets have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.

The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Ryan Herring who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 40-18 over the past five seasons at Oxford. Under his direction the Yellow Jackets have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Herring.

Coach Herring's overall record as a head football coach in twelve season stands at 86-49 (63.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach Herring's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times and won three region championships.

The Oxford Yellow Jackets will play in Class 6A region six during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Yellow Jackets remain in 6A but move from region seven over to region six. The Yellow Jackets have one of the toughest schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 70-45 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 6A and 29th in the AHSAA. Oxford will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season.

Region six will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season.

The Yellow Jackets enter the 2018 season riding a 20 game regular season winning streak. They have won 7 straight games on their home turf at Lamar Field. The Yellow Jackets should be considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

The Yellow Jackets open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Munford on Friday, August 24 at Munford Stadium. Last year the Munford Lions finished with an overall record of 9-2 and in first place in Class 4A region three. The Lions lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to W.S. Neal by a score of 21-12.

Oxford and Munford have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 4-0-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 1974 with Oxford winning by a score of 31-22.

Oxford returns 6A All-State  offensive lineman Clay Webb. He was named to the first team last season. The Yellow Jackets also return  running back Tyetus Lindsey. He was named to the first team.

College prospects include: Clay Webb (6-4, 307) offensive center, Kendall McCallum (6-2, 230) inside linebacker,
