 2018 Preview 


       Hueytown completed the 2017 season with a 5-6 record. With their 2-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region five, the Golden Gophers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Hueytown's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Oxford by a score of 30-7.

       Since 2010, Hueytown has gone a combined 53-37. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 6A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Hueytown has managed to compile a record of 123-136. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 6A and 215th in the AHSAA.




       The Golden Gophers are led by head coach Scott Mansell who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 20-22 over the past four seasons at Hueytown. Under his direction the Golden Gophers have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Mansell.

       Coach Mansell's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 20-22 (47.6%).

       The Hueytown Golden Gophers will play in Class 6A region four during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Golden Gophers remain in 6A but move from region five over to region four.

       With a little luck and some improvement, the Golden Gophers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region four this season.

       The Golden Gophers open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Homewood on Thursday, August 23 at Waldrop Stadium. Last year the Homewood Patriots finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in first place in Class 6A region five. The Patriots lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Clay-Chalkville by a score of 30-0.

       Hueytown and Homewood have met a total of 18 times on the football field. The Golden Gophers have a 4-14-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2017 with Homewood winning by a score of 23-7.

       Hueytown returns 6A All-State  running back Roydell Williams. He was named to the second team last season.
