 2018 Preview 


       Cordova completed the 2017 season with a 4-7 record. With their 3-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 4A region six, the Blue Devils earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Cordova's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Wilson by a score of 35-8.

       Cordova took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2013. The Blue Devils hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just four games which followed a 9-3 record in 2016.

       Cordova was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Blue Devils want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.5 points a game.

       Since 2010, Cordova has gone a combined 57-37. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 4A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Cordova has managed to compile a record of 171-113. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 4A and 98th in the AHSAA.




       The Blue Devils are led by head coach Jimmy Gay who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 38-23 over the past five seasons at Cordova. Under his direction the Blue Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach Gay.

       Coach Gay's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 59-27 (68.6%). Over the course of his career, Coach Gay's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won two region championships. Coach Gay won a state championship at in 2003.

       The Cordova Blue Devils will play in Class 4A region five during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Blue Devils remain in 4A but move from region six over to region five.

       The Blue Devils will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season.

       The Blue Devils open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Dora on Friday, August 24 at Horace Roberts Field. Last year the Dora Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in second place in Class 4A region six. The Bulldogs lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Saks by a score of 31-24.

       Cordova and Dora have met a total of 100 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 50-48-2 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2017 with Dora winning by a score of 48-12.

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
