 2018 Preview

Briarwood completed the 2017 season with a 14-1 record. The Lions cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Briarwood captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 5A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. The Lions won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 5A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by St. Pauls at the Alabama Super Seven 17-14 in Auburn.

The Lions won as many games as in any season since 2007.

The defense was very stingy last season as Briarwood ranked 12th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 10.6 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Lions have gone 26-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Briarwood has gone a combined 75-31. Their 71.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 5A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Briarwood has gone a combined 242-74. Their 77.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 5A and 9th in the AHSAA.

The Lions are led by head coach Fred Yancey who is entering his twenty-ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 269-92 over the past twenty-eight seasons at Briarwood. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-six times. They have won sixteen region crowns with Coach Yancey. Coach Yancey has won three state championships at Briarwood, the last coming in 2003.

Coach Yancey's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-eight season stands at 269-92 (74.5%). His 269 wins rank 5th among active coaches in the AHSAA. He has a 58-23 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches.

The Briarwood Lions will play in Class 5A region four during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Lions remain in 5A but move from region five over to region four.

The Lions enter the 2018 season riding a 19 game regular season winning streak. They have won 9 straight games on their home turf at Lions Pride Stadium.

The Lions should be considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Lions are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Lions have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 1992 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

The Lions open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Chelsea on Friday, August 31 at Chelsea High School Football Stadium. Last year the Chelsea Hornets finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in fifth place in Class 6A region three. The Hornets closed out the regular season with a loss to Cullman by a score of 37-29.

Briarwood and Chelsea have met a total of 34 times on the football field. The Lions have a 24-9-1 record against the Hornets. They last met in 2017 with Briarwood winning by a score of 19-7.

Briarwood returns 5A All-State  defensive back Cade Dickinson. He was named to the first team last season.

       College prospects include: J.R. Tran-Reno (6-1, 200) running back,
