UMS-Wright completed the 2016 season with a 9-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a third place finish in Class 4A region one, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. UMS-Wright reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Handley by a score of 20-14. The defense was very stingy last season as UMS-Wright ranked 6th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 10.1 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 21-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, UMS-Wright has gone a combined 72-21. Their 77.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 4A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, UMS-Wright has gone a combined 252-88. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 4A and 15th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2007. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Terry Curtis who is entering his nineteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 199-47 over the past eighteen seasons at UMS-Wright. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of eighteen times. They have won thirteen region crowns with Coach Curtis. Coach Curtis has won five state championships at UMS-Wright, the last coming in 2012. Coach Curtis' overall record as a head football coach in twenty-eight season stands at 276-83 (76.9%). His 276 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Curtis' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-five times and won sixteen region championships. He has a 60-20 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. The UMS-Wright Bulldogs will play in Class 4A region one during the 2017 season. The Bulldogs should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Bulldogs have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 1993 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The defense returns Senior linebacker Russ Myers who got in on 112 tackles last season. The Bulldogs open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Mary Montgomery on Friday, August 25 at Grider Field. Last year the Mary Montgomery Vikings finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in sixth place in Class 7A region one. The Vikings closed out the regular season with a loss to Baker by a score of 35-28. UMS-Wright and Mary Montgomery have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 10-5-0 record against the Vikings. They last met in 2016 with Mary Montgomery winning by a score of 7-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
