 2017 Preview

Thompson completed the 2016 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Thompson just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 7A region three with a 3-4 region record.

The Warriors have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2006 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Warriors had some tough luck last season as three of their five losses were by less than eight points.

Thompson was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Warriors want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.3 points a game.

Since 2010, the Thompson football program has struggled with a record of 20-50.

Over the past 25 seasons, Thompson has managed to compile a record of 112-146. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 7A and 254th in the AHSAA.

The Warriors are led by head coach Mark Freeman who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 10-10 over the past two seasons at Thompson. The Warriors have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Freeman.

Coach Freeman's overall record as a head football coach in eighteen season stands at 174-47 (78.7%). His 174 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Freeman's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fifteen times and won nine region championships. He has a 33-9 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Freeman won six state championships prior to arriving at Thompson, the last coming in 2013 at .

The Thompson Warriors will play in Class 7A region three during the 2017 season.

The Warriors should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. Thompson has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2006 but have hopes of returning to the post season this year.

The defense returns Senior cornerback Myles Brown who collected 3 interceptions last year.

The Warriors open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Hapeville Charter GA on Friday, August 25 at James L. Simmons Stadium.

This will be the second meeting between Thompson and Hapeville Charter GA on the football field. The Warriors have a 1-0-0 record against Hapeville Charter GA. They last met in with

Thompson returns 7A All-State Junior offensive lineman Amari Kight. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. The Warriors also return Senior defensive lineman Mackie McNeal.
