 2017 Preview

Minor completed the 2016 season with a 11-2 record. Last year Minor captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Tigers since the 2003 season. Minor lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Ramsay team by a score of 40-20.

The Tigers won as many games as in any season since 2000. The 631 points scored by the Tigers last year were a team record in a single season.

The high-scoring Minor offense ranked 4th in the AHSAA. They averaged 48.5 points a game.

Since 2010, Minor has gone a combined 46-32. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 6A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Minor has managed to compile a record of 161-118. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 6A and 104th in the AHSAA.

Despite an 11-2 record and a trip to the third round of the playoffs last year, George Bates will not return to the sidelines at Minor in 2017. His teams went 26-11 in three seasons. All three of his teams reached the playoffs.

Curtis Graves takes over the football program at Minor entering the 2017 season. He has been at Minor the past three seasons serving as an assistant coach.

Graves has coaches at Central Tuscaloosa and Greensboro where his three teams finished 17-15 (2010-12).

Coach Graves' overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 17-15 (53.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Graves' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times .

The Minor Tigers will play in Class 6A region six during the 2017 season.

The Tigers should be considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Senior Delonte Evans returns after catching 52 passes for 1,104 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Junior Dominic Ellis also returns after rushing for 359 yards on 72 carries and scoring 7 touchdowns.

The Tigers open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Greensboro on Friday, August 25 at Robert Lucky Stadium. Last year the Greensboro Raiders finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in second place in Class 4A region four. The Raiders lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Leeds by a score of 19-12.

Minor and Greensboro have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 2-0-0 record against the Raiders. They last met in 2016 with Minor winning by a score of 48-8.
