2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Helena finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Helena just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 6A region three with a 2-4 region record. The Huskies had some tough luck last season as four of their seven losses were by less than eight points. The Huskies hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just three games which followed a 9-3 record in 2015. Helena was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Huskies want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.7 points a game. Helena is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only three seasons. They have managed a record of 17-16 over the past three years. The Huskies are led by head coach Watt Parker who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 17-16 over the past three seasons at Helena. Under his direction the Huskies have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Parker. Coach Parker's overall record as a head football coach in fifteen season stands at 86-78 (52.4%). Over the course of his career, Coach Parker's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times and won one region championship. The Helena Huskies will play in Class 6A region three during the 2017 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Huskies could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season. Helena came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. Senior Dionte Tolbert returns after catching 36 passes for 447 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Huskies open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Mountain Brook on Friday, September 1 at Husky Stadium. Last year the Mountain Brook Spartans finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 7A region three. The Spartans lost in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs to Gadsden City by a score of 15-7. Helena and Mountain Brook have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Huskies have a 0-2-0 record against the Spartans. They last met in 2016 with Mountain Brook winning by a score of 21-14. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
