 2017 Preview 


       Gordo completed the 2016 season with a 13-1 record. The Green Wave cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Gordo captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Gordo made a nice playoff run in 2016, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Mobile Christian team by the score of 21-14.

       The 584 points scored by the Green Wave last year were a team record in a single season.

       The high-scoring Gordo offense ranked 17th in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.7 points a game.

       The Green Wave defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 10th in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 11.7 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Green Wave have gone 25-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Gordo has gone a combined 73-16. Their 82.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 3A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Gordo has gone a combined 218-86. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 3A and 20th in the AHSAA. The Green Wave have been successful on the football field with twenty-four winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1992.

       The Green Wave are led by head coach Ryan Lolley who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 45-7 over the past four seasons at Gordo. Under his direction the Green Wave have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Lolley.

       Coach Lolley's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 45-7 (86.5%).

       The Gordo Green Wave will play in Class 3A region four during the 2017 season.

       The Green Wave enter the 2017 season riding a 30 game regular season winning streak. They have won 7 straight games on their home turf at Green Wave Stadium.

       While most teams rebuild during the off season, Gordo has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Green Wave should be considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Green Wave are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Green Wave have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2000 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

       The Green Wave open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Fayette County on Friday, August 25 at John Morgan Brown Stadium. Last year the Fayette County Tigers finished with an overall record of 5-7 and in second place in Class 4A region six. The Tigers lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Madison Academy by a score of 36-0.

       Gordo and Fayette County have met a total of 77 times on the football field. The Green Wave have a 33-42-2 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2016 with Gordo winning by a score of 21-6.

       Gordo returns 3A All-State Senior athlete Collin Herring. He was named to the first team last season.
