2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Columbia finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Columbia finished eighth in Class 6A region eight with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Eagles have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Eagles have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2017. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Columbia averaged scoring just 9.3 points a game. The Eagles also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 40.8 points a game. The Eagles would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, the Columbia football program has struggled with a record of 16-54. Over the past 11 seasons, Columbia has not won much with a record of 31-79. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 55th in Class 6A and 351st in the AHSAA. The Eagles have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 2010. Chris Hancock resigned as the head coach at Columbia after just three seasons that saw his teams finish a combined 6-24. His final squad went 0-10. Marcus McCall has been named as the interim head football coach for the 2017 season. The Columbia Eagles will play in Class 6A region eight during the 2017 season. The Eagles enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 12 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Eagles will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region eight. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Columbia will be to simply win some games. The Eagles open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Albertville on Friday, August 25 at Milton Frank Stadium. Last year the Albertville Aggies finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 6A region seven. The Aggies lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Hartselle by a score of 21-7. Columbia and Albertville have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 0-5-0 record against the Aggies. They last met in 2016 with Albertville winning by a score of 42-13. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
