 2017 Preview

Boaz finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Boaz finished seventh in Class 5A region seven with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Pirates lost as many games as in any season since 1988. The defense allowed a team record 423 points last season.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Boaz averaged scoring just 9.4 points a game. The Pirates also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 42.3 points a game.

The Pirates would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Boaz has gone a combined 30-44. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 5A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Boaz has managed to compile a record of 128-149. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 5A and 228th in the AHSAA.

Boaz football coach Eric Whaley stepped down last week following a return of the cancer he has been battling the past two years.

Jeremy Sullivan has been hired as the head football coach at Boaz. He spent the past two seasons at Pelham. He was the Panthers offensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

Sullivan was the head coach at Citronelle (2009-10) with a 7-13 record before moving on to Jackson where he was an assistant coach.

Coach Sullivan's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 7-13 (35.0%).

The Boaz Pirates will play in Class 5A region seven during the 2017 season. The Pirates have one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 63-45 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 5A and 32nd in the AHSAA.

With a little luck and some improvement, the Pirates could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season. Boaz missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2017.

The Pirates open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent J.B. Pennington on Friday, September 1 at W.R. Sutton Memorial Stadium. Last year the J.B. Pennington Tigers finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 3A region six. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Randolph County by a score of 28-6.

Boaz and J.B. Pennington have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Pirates have a 6-5-1 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2016 with J.B. Pennington winning by a score of 41-14.
