Athens finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Athens finished seventh in Class 6A region eight with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Since 2010, Athens has gone a combined 29-47. Their 38.0% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 6A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Athens has managed to compile a record of 177-117. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 6A and 87th in the AHSAA. The Golden Eagles are led by head coach Cody Gross who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Athens. The Golden Eagles saw improvement from a 2-8 record the season before coach Gross arrived. The Golden Eagles have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction.
