2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ashville completed the 2016 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Ashville just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region five with a 2-5 region record. The Bulldogs have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2005 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Bulldogs last playoff victory came during the 2001 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Ashville was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bulldogs want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.7 points a game. Since 2010, the Ashville football program has struggled with a record of 20-50. Over the past 25 seasons, Ashville has managed to compile a record of 118-152. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 4A and 248th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2005. Steve Martin leaves Ashville after four years with a 10-30 record without ever leading the team to the playoffs. Trey Pike takes over the football program at Ashville for the 2017 season. Pike has previously been the head coach at Crossville (2011) and Ellwood Christian (2015). Both teams finished with a 3-7 record. Coach Pike's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 6-14 (30.0%). The Ashville Bulldogs will play in Class 4A region five during the 2017 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Bulldogs if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. The Bulldogs open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Ragland on Friday, September 1 at Ken Logan Stadium. Last year the Ragland Purple Devils finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in second place in Class 1A region four. The Purple Devils lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Notasulga by a score of 37-36. Ashville and Ragland have met a total of 33 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 27-6-0 record against the Purple Devils. They last met in 2016 with Ashville winning by a score of 17-6. Ashville returns 4A All-State Senior athlete Landon Cornutt. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. The Bulldogs also return Senior defensive lineman Malek Williams. He was named to the second team. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
