2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Woodlawn finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Woodlawn finished sixth in Class 5A region five with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Colonels have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2011 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Colonels last playoff victory came during the 1994 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Woodlawn was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Colonels want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.3 points a game. The Colonels would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the Woodlawn football program has struggled with a record of 17-54. Over the past 25 seasons, Woodlawn has not won much with a record of 70-182. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 55th in Class 5A and 360th in the AHSAA. The Colonels have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Cornelius Turner leaves Woodlawn after just two seasons and a 3-17 record. The Colonels have struggled on the football field winning just seven games the past five years. George Bates takes over at Woodlawn after three seasons as the head football coach at Minor. His teams finished a combined 26-11 with a 4-3 playoff record. Bates also was the head coach at Parker during the 2012 and 2013 seasons with a 12-10 record. He is a graduate of Midfield High. Coach Bates' overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 38-21 (64.4%). Over the course of his career, Coach Bates' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times and won one region championship. The coaching carousel continues at Woodlawn as the Colonels begin the season with their fifth head coach in the past six seasons. The Woodlawn Colonels will play in Class 5A region five during the 2017 season. The Colonels have one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 64-47 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 5A and 31st in the AHSAA. It will be an uphill battle for the Colonels if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. After just 2 wins last year, Woodlawn will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The defense returns Senior linebacker Tramaine Sims who got in on 69 tackles last season. The Colonels open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Jackson-Olin on Friday, August 25 at Lawson Field. Last year the Jackson-Olin Mustangs finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 6A region five. The Mustangs lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Pinson Valley by a score of 31-5. Woodlawn and Jackson-Olin have met a total of 27 times on the football field. The Colonels have a 17-9-1 record against the Mustangs. They last met in 2016 with Jackson-Olin winning by a score of 35-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
