 2017 Preview

Wenonah completed the 2016 season with a 11-3 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region five, the Dragons earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. The Dragons won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 5A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Beauregard at the Alabama Super Seven 33-13 in Auburn.

No team at Wenonah ever won more games in a season than the eleven victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 1995. The 450 points scored by the Dragons last year were a team record in a single season.

The defense was very stingy last season as Wenonah ranked 15th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.1 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Dragons have gone 21-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Wenonah has gone a combined 48-27. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 5A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Wenonah has managed to compile a record of 150-107. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 5A and 106th in the AHSAA.

The Dragons are led by head coach Ronald Cheatham who is entering his twenty-ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 159-129 over the past twenty-eight seasons at Wenonah. Under his direction the Dragons have qualified for the playoffs a total of seventeen times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Cheatham.

Coach Cheatham's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-eight season stands at 159-129 (55.2%). His 159 wins rank 20th among active coaches in the AHSAA.

The Wenonah Dragons will play in Class 5A region five during the 2017 season.

The Dragons should be considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Dragons are making another deep run into the playoffs.

Carlos Rogers returns for his Senior season after completing 99 of 195 passes for 1,818 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also rushed for 293 yards. Junior Keontay Jones also returns after rushing for 409 yards on 36 carries and scoring 3 touchdowns.

The defense returns Senior strong safety Devon Matthews who got in on 85 tackles and 9 sacks along with Senior linebacker Sandy Poole who registered 75 tackles and 13 sacks last season.

The defense also returns Sophomore safety Xavier Stewart who collected 5 interceptions along with Senior safety Anthony Hudson who gathered in 4 interceptions last year.

The Dragons open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Midfield on Thursday, August 31 at Winfred E. Jackson Stadium. Last year the Midfield Patriots finished with an overall record of 3-6 and in fifth place in Class 3A region four. The Patriots ended last season on a positive note with a win over New Hope by a score of 48-47 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Wenonah and Midfield have met a total of 18 times on the football field. The Dragons have a 14-4-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2016 with Wenonah winning by a score of 48-0.

Wenonah returns 5A All-State Senior defensive lineman Devon Matthews. He was named to the second team last season. The Dragons also return Senior linebacker Sandy Poole. He was named to the second team.
