 2017 Preview

Selma finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Selma finished seventh in Class 6A region four with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Selma took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2012. The Saints lost as many games as in any season since 1997. The Saints last playoff victory came during the 1984 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Selma was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Saints want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.9 points a game.

Selma struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 35.6 points a game.

Since 2010, Selma has gone a combined 32-40. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 6A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Selma has managed to compile a record of 98-159. Their 38.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 6A and 298th in the AHSAA.

Keon Handley leaves Selma after one year with a 1-9 record. He has accepted the same position at Fairfield.

Christopher Raymond returns to the head coaching ranks at Selma for the 2017 football season. He has previously served at Southside Selma, LeFlore and Sumter Central with a combined record of 55-83.

Coach Raymond's overall record as a head football coach in thirteen season stands at 55-83 (39.9%). Over the course of his career, Coach Raymond's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times .

The Selma Saints will play in Class 6A region four during the 2017 season.

This season, the Saints will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region four.

Tyreshon Freeman returns for his Sophomore season after completing 43 of 80 passes for 597 yards and 4 touchdowns.

The Saints open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Southside Selma on Friday, September 1 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Southside Selma Panthers finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 3A region three. The Panthers lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Montevallo by a score of 45-18.

Selma and Southside Selma have met a total of 41 times on the football field. The Saints have a 32-9-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2016 with Southside Selma winning by a score of 24-18.
