 2017 Preview

Ragland completed the 2016 season with a 7-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region four, the Purple Devils earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Ragland's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Notasulga by a score of 37-36.

As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Ragland has gone a combined 62-21. Their 75.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 1A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 24 seasons, Ragland has managed to compile a record of 167-113. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 1A and 92nd in the AHSAA.

The Purple Devils are led by head coach Brian Alred who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-4 record in his first season at Ragland. The Purple Devils saw improvement from a 3-8 record the season before coach Alred arrived. Under his direction the Purple Devils have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Alred.

Coach Alred's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 7-4 (63.6%).

The Ragland Purple Devils will play in Class 1A region four during the 2017 season.

The Purple Devils enter the 2017 season riding a 5 game regular season winning streak.

The Purple Devils should be considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Purple Devils have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2000 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

The Purple Devils open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Ohatchee on Friday, August 25 at Roy C. Owens Field. Last year the Ohatchee Indians finished with an overall record of 12-2 and in second place in Class 3A region five. The Indians lost in the semi-finals round of the Class 3A playoffs to Piedmont by a score of 53-26.

Ragland and Ohatchee have met a total of 29 times on the football field. The Purple Devils have a 3-26-0 record against the Indians. They last met in 2016 with Ohatchee winning by a score of 52-19.
