 2017 Preview 


       Oxford completed the 2016 season with a 10-1 record. The Yellow Jackets cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Oxford captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Oxford's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Muscle Shoals by a score of 31-17.

       The Yellow Jackets hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Herring saw improvement as they won ten games following a 3-7 record in 2015.

       The defense was very stingy last season as Oxford ranked 16th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.5 points a game.

       Since 2010, Oxford has gone a combined 53-28. Their 65.0% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 6A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Oxford has managed to compile a record of 192-99. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 6A and 47th in the AHSAA. The Yellow Jackets have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.

       The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Ryan Herring who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 28-17 over the past four seasons at Oxford. Under his direction the Yellow Jackets have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won one region crown with Coach Herring.

       Coach Herring's overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 74-48 (60.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach Herring's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won two region championships.

       The Oxford Yellow Jackets will play in Class 6A region seven during the 2017 season.

       The Yellow Jackets enter the 2017 season riding a 10 game regular season winning streak.

       The Yellow Jackets should be considered one of the favorites for the region seven championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

       The Yellow Jackets open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Hillcrest Tuscaloosa on Friday, August 25 at Lamar Field. Last year the Hillcrest Tuscaloosa Patriots finished with an overall record of 11-1 and in first place in Class 6A region four. The Patriots lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Spanish Fort by a score of 23-13.

       This will be the second meeting between Oxford and Hillcrest Tuscaloosa on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 1-0-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in with

       Oxford returns 6A All-State Senior linebacker Brody Syer. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. The Yellow Jackets also return Junior offensive lineman Clay Webb. He was named to the first team. The Yellow Jackets also return Junior running back Tyetus Smith-Lindsey. He was named to the honorable mention team.
