 2017 Preview 


       Oakman completed the 2016 season with a 8-5 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 3A region four, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Oakman lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Mobile Christian team by a score of 44-12.

       The Wildcats lost as many games as in any season since 2010.

       Since 2010, Oakman has gone a combined 57-26. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 3A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Oakman has managed to compile a record of 144-138. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 3A and 178th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2010.

       The Wildcats are led by head coach Mark Hastings who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 58-35 over the past eight seasons at Oakman. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Hastings.

       Coach Hastings' overall record as a head football coach in eighteen season stands at 107-87 (55.2%). His 107 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Hastings' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times and won two region championships.

       The Oakman Wildcats will play in Class 3A region four during the 2017 season. The Wildcats have one of the toughest schedules in Class 3A. Their opponents had a combined record of 68-46 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 3A and 19th in the AHSAA.

       The Wildcats should be in contention for a playoff spot in region four this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2010 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2017.

      Jon Avery returns for his Senior season after completing 124 of 195 passes for 1,827 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also rushed for 465 yards and another 12 scores.

      Senior Nathan Gillbreath returns after rushing for 665 yards on 103 carries and scoring 8 touchdowns. Senior Nick Moody also returns to the offense after catching 34 passes for 475 yards and 3 TDs. He also intercepted 3 passes and got in on 85 tackles.

      The defense returns Senior cornerback Connor Woods who got in on 84 tackles and 4 interceptions along with Senior middle linebacker Malcolm Hogue who registered 70 tackles last season.

       The Wildcats open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Lamar County on Friday, September 1 at Hosea Collins Field. Last year the Lamar County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in first place in Class 2A region eight. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to West End Walnut Grove by a score of 41-7.

       Oakman and Lamar County have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 4-6-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2016 with Oakman winning by a score of 40-8.

       Oakman returns 3A All-State Senior defensive back Connor Woods. He was named to the second team last season.
