 2017 Preview 


       Isabella completed the 2016 season with a 10-2 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region three, the Mustangs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Isabella reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Georgiana by a score of 26-21.

       The Mustangs won as many games as in any season since 2002. The 539 points scored by the Mustangs last year were a team record in a single season. The Mustangs hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Leonard saw improvement as they won ten games following a 1-9 record in 2015.

       The high-scoring Isabella offense ranked 10th in the AHSAA. They averaged 44.9 points a game.

       Since 2010, Isabella has gone a combined 40-34. Their 54.0% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 1A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Isabella has managed to compile a record of 113-151. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 1A and 257th in the AHSAA.

       The Mustangs are led by head coach Tate Leonard who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 10-2 record in his first season at Isabella. The Mustangs saw improvement from a 1-9 record the season before coach Leonard arrived. Under his direction the Mustangs have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Leonard.

       Coach Leonard's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 10-2 (83.3%).

       The Isabella Mustangs will play in Class 1A region three during the 2017 season.

       The Mustangs should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

      Senior Austin Brasher returns after rushing for 445 yards on 44 carries and scoring 8 touchdowns.

      Senior Jarred Campbell also returns after rushing for 697 yards on 40 carries and scoring 9 touchdowns.

       The Mustangs open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Verbena on Friday, September 1 at Red Devil Stadium. Last year the Verbena Red Devils finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in second place in Class 2A region four. The Red Devils lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Goshen by a score of 48-25.

       Isabella and Verbena have met a total of 92 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 36-53-3 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2016 with Isabella winning by a score of 49-42.

       Isabella returns 1A All-State Senior defensive lineman Willie Washington. He was named to the first team last season.

The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
