 2017 Preview 


       Curry finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Curry finished seventh in Class 5A region six with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Yellow Jackets have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2011 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Yellow Jackets last playoff victory came during the 1996 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Curry was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Yellow Jackets want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.8 points a game.

       The Yellow Jackets would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the Curry football program has struggled with a record of 14-57.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Curry has not won much with a record of 79-191. Their 29.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 5A and 348th in the AHSAA. The Yellow Jackets have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 1996.

       The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Philip Smith who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 3-17 over the past two seasons at Curry. The Yellow Jackets have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith.

       Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 70-52 (57.4%). Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won one region championship.

       The Curry Yellow Jackets will play in Class 5A region six during the 2017 season.

       This season, the Yellow Jackets will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six.

       The Yellow Jackets open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Berry Fayette on Friday, August 25 at Fred Webster Stadium. Last year the Berry Fayette Wildcats finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 1A region five. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Cedar Bluff by a score of 41-20.

       Curry and Berry Fayette have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 3-4-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2016 with Berry Fayette winning by a score of 6-0.
