Cottonwood finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Cottonwood finished sixth in Class 2A region two with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Cottonwood was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bears want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.9 points a game. Since 2010, Cottonwood has gone a combined 38-38. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 2A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Cottonwood has managed to compile a record of 155-128. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 2A and 134th in the AHSAA. The Bears are led by head coach John Gilmore who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Cottonwood. The Bears have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Gilmore. Coach Gilmore's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 26-31 (45.6%). Over the course of his career, Coach Gilmore's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times . The Cottonwood Bears will play in Class 2A region two during the 2017 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Bears if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season. After just 2 wins last year, Cottonwood will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Bears open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Houston County on Friday, August 25 at Hicks Stadium. Last year the Houston County Lions finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class 1A region two. The Lions lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Linden by a score of 77-7. Cottonwood and Houston County have met a total of 84 times on the football field.
