Cherokee completed the 2016 season with a 6-5 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region eight, the Indians earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Cherokee's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Sumiton Christian by a score of 49-28. The Indians improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2008. The Indians won as many games as in any season since 2008. It marked the first time since the 2002 season that the Indians qualified for the playoffs. The Indians last playoff victory came during the 1999 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Since 2010, Cherokee has gone a combined 22-47. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 1A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Cherokee has managed to compile a record of 104-149. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 1A and 277th in the AHSAA. The Indians are led by head coach Lymos McDonald who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 10-10 over the past two seasons at Cherokee. Under his direction the Indians have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach McDonald. The Indians should be in contention for a playoff spot in region eight this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. The Indians open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent R.A. Hubbard on Thursday, August 24 at W.L. Harris Stadium. Last year the R.A. Hubbard Chiefs finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 1A region seven. The Chiefs closed out the regular season with a loss to Sheffield by a score of 57-8. Cherokee and R.A. Hubbard have met a total of 16 times on the football field. The Indians have a 6-9-1 record against the Chiefs. They last met in 2016 with R.A.
