 2016 Preview 


       Winfield completed the 2015 season with a 10-2 record. Last year Winfield captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Pirates since the 2005 season. Winfield reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Colbert County by a score of 26-20.

       The Pirates won as many games as in any season since 2007.

       The high-scoring Winfield offense ranked 21st in the AHSAA. They averaged 40.5 points a game.

       Since 2010, Winfield has gone a combined 39-26. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 4A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Winfield has managed to compile a record of 177-108. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 4A and 77th in the AHSAA.

       The Pirates are led by head coach David McKinney who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 22-12 over the past three seasons at Winfield. Under his direction the Pirates have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won one region crown with Coach McKinney.

       Coach McKinney's overall record as a head football coach in nine season stands at 74-34 (68.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach McKinney's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times and won three region championships.

       The Winfield Pirates will play in Class 4A region six during the 2016 season. The Pirates move up in classification to Class 4A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

       The Pirates enter the 2016 season riding a 9 game regular season winning streak. Winfield has won 7 consecutive region games. They have won 6 straight games on their home turf at Estes Hudson Stadium.

       The Pirates will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region six this season.

      

       The Pirates open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Sipsey Valley on Thursday, August 18 at Estes Hudson Stadium. Last year the Sipsey Valley Bears finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 4A region four. The Bears ended last season on a positive note with a win over Hale County by a score of 21-6 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Winfield and Sipsey Valley have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Pirates have a 2-0-0 record against the Bears. They last met in with

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Parrish scored a record 77 points in a playoff game against Cedar Bluff in 2001. The Tornados were shutout the following week 19-0 by Courtland.
