 2016 Preview

Vinemont finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Vinemont finished sixth in Class 3A region five with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Eagles lost as many games as in any season since 1981. The defense allowed a team record 429 points last season. The Eagles last playoff victory came during the 1993 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Vinemont was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Eagles want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.3 points a game.

Vinemont struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 42.9 points a game.

Since 2010, Vinemont has gone a combined 22-38. Their 37.0% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 3A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Vinemont has managed to compile a record of 111-146. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 3A and 250th in the AHSAA.

The Eagles are led by head coach Matt Norris who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Vinemont. The Eagles have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Norris.

Coach Norris' overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 1-9 (10.0%).

The Vinemont Eagles will play in Class 3A region six during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Eagles remain in 3A but move from region five over to region six.

Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. It will be an uphill battle for the Eagles if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region six this season. After just a single win last year, Vinemont will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season.

The Eagles open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Good Hope on Thursday, August 25 at James W. Shabel Stadium. Last year the Good Hope Raiders finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 4A region seven. The Raiders ended last season on a positive note with a win over Hanceville by a score of 41-21 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Vinemont and Good Hope have met a total of 48 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 16-32-0 record against the Raiders. They last met in 2013 with Good Hope winning by a score of 21-13.
