2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Saraland completed the 2015 season with a 8-3 record. With their 6-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 6A region one, the Spartans earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Saraland's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Benjamin Russell by a score of 41-10. The Spartans hope to get back closer to the 13-2 record in 2014. Over the past two seasons the Spartans have gone 21-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Saraland has gone a combined 49-23. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 6A over the past six seasons. Their last losing season was 2010. The Spartans are led by head coach Jeff Kelly who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 46-16 over the past five seasons at Saraland. Under his direction the Spartans have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Kelly. Coach Kelly's overall record as a head football coach in twelve season stands at 93-50 (65.0%). Over the course of his career, Coach Kelly's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won one region championship. If Saraland can win seven games this season, Coach Kelly will reach the 100 win milestone. The Saraland Spartans will play in Class 6A region one during the 2016 season. The Spartans should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Spartans open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Baker on Friday, August 19 at Hornet Field. Last year the Baker Hornets finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in sixth place in Class 7A region one. The Hornets ended last season on a positive note with a win over Davidson by a score of 41-20 after failing to gain a playoff spot. This will be the second meeting between Saraland and Baker on the football field. The Spartans have a 1-0-0 record against the Hornets. They last met in with Saraland returns 6A All-State Senior offensive lineman Matthew Trehem. He was named to the second team last season. College prospects include: WyDale Flott (6-0, 175) cornerback, | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
