 2016 Preview

Reeltown completed the 2015 season with a 6-5 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 2A region five, the Rebels earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Reeltown's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Cleveland by a score of 23-20.

The Rebels lost as many games as in any season since 2007. The Rebels had some tough luck last season as three of their five losses were by less than eight points.

As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Reeltown has gone a combined 56-19. Their 75.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 2A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Reeltown has gone a combined 216-97. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 2A and 33rd in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2007.

Jackie ONeal took over the football program at Reeltown in 1988. Over the next 28 seasons his teams won consistently and made the playoffs in all but three seasons.

Reeltown reached the 1991 and 1992 state championship games but came up short in search of their coachs first title. The Rebels reached the title game again in 2000 before winning Coach ONeals first state championship in 2001 by defeating Notasulga 46-6. Reeltown would win another title in 2009 with a 16-8 win over Clay County.

ONeals overall record is 241-110 with a region record of 104-32 which ranks among the best in state history. His teams have won fourteen area and region titles during his tenure.

He retired from the football field following the 2015 season.

Matt Johnson, named to replace Coach ONeal, was most recently the defensive coordinator at Upson-Lee High in Georgia. Prior to 2015, Johnson served as an assistant coach at Andalusia starting in 2010.

Johnson played under ONeal, who retired after this past season, and was part of the Rebels state championship team in 2001.

The Reeltown Rebels will play in Class 2A region five during the 2016 season.

The Rebels will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2007 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2016.

New head coach Matt Johnson has really big shoes to fill in replacing hall of fame coach Jackie ONeal. He is only the third head coach at the school since 1975.

The Rebels open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Notasulga on Thursday, August 18 at Nix-Webster-Oneal Stadium. Last year the Notasulga Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in first place in Class 1A region three. The Blue Devils lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Linden by a score of 26-14.

Reeltown and Notasulga have met a total of 67 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 40-26-1 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 2013 with Reeltown winning by a score of 39-12.
