2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Glencoe completed the 2015 season with a 9-2 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 3A region six, the Yellow Jackets earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Glencoe's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Colbert County by a score of 20-7. Over the past two seasons the Yellow Jackets have gone 22-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Glencoe has gone a combined 54-18. Their 75.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 3A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Glencoe has managed to compile a record of 158-118. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 3A and 111st in the AHSAA. Lee Ozmint stepped down after the 2015 season to accept a position with the Oxford Yellow Jackets. In ten seasons as the head coach at Glencoe, his teams went 77-37. His last seven squads qualified for the post season with an record of 7-7. His 2014 team finished the regular season 10-0 before losing in the semi-finals of the playoffs. Rusty Davis was hired to replaced the retiring Lee Ozmint. He most recently served as an assistant coach at Smiths Station. He is a 1985 graduate of Hokes Bluff and Millsaps College. He coached at Smiths Station for the past 24 years and in the most recent years coached the quarterbacks and receivers. The Glencoe Yellow Jackets will play in Class 3A region five during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Yellow Jackets remain in 3A but move from region six over to region five. Region five will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. The Yellow Jackets enter the 2016 season riding a 6 game regular season winning streak. The Yellow Jackets should be in contention for a playoff spot in region five this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2008 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2016. The Yellow Jackets open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent West End Walnut Grove on Friday, August 19 at Yellow Jacket Stadium. Last year the West End Walnut Grove Patriots finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in fifth place in Class 2A region seven. The Patriots ended last season on a positive note with a win over Appalachian by a score of 48-15 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Glencoe and West End Walnut Grove have met a total of 28 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 16-11-1 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2009 with Glencoe winning by a score of 28-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
