 2016 Preview

Clay-Chalkville completed the 2015 season with a 14-1 record. The Cougars cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Clay-Chalkville captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Cougars won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 6A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Spanish Fort at the Alabama Super Seven 31-28 in Auburn.

The high-scoring Clay-Chalkville offense ranked 2nd in the AHSAA. They averaged 48.7 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Cougars have gone 29-1 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Clay-Chalkville has gone a combined 61-18. Their 77.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 6A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 20 seasons, Clay-Chalkville has gone a combined 164-76. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 6A and 35th in the AHSAA.

The Cougars are led by head coach Jerry Hood who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 69-21 over the past seven seasons at Clay-Chalkville. Under his direction the Cougars have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Hood. Coach Hood led Clay-Chalkville to a state championship in 2014.

Coach Hood's overall record as a head football coach in twelve season stands at 97-47 (67.4%). Over the course of his career, Coach Hood's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won four region championships.

If Clay-Chalkville can win three games this season, Coach Hood will reach the 100 win milestone.

The Clay-Chalkville Cougars will play in Class 6A region six during the 2016 season. The Cougars have one of the toughest schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 70-45 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 6A and 31st in the AHSAA.

The Cougars enter the 2016 season riding a 23 game regular season winning streak. Clay-Chalkville has won 14 consecutive region games. They have won 15 straight games on their home turf at Cougar Stadium.

The Cougars enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region six and could very well be representing the North in the Class 6A title game.

Wide receiver Nico Collins returns for his senior season after catching 60 passes for 1,103 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior last year.

The Cougars open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Florence on Friday, August 19 at Cougar Stadium. Last year the Florence Falcons finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 6A region eight. The Falcons ended last season on a positive note with a win over Huntsville by a score of 31-21 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Clay-Chalkville and Florence have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 3-2-0 record against the Falcons. They last met in 2014 with Clay-Chalkville winning by a score of 35-21.

College prospects include: Eddie Rox (6-2, 275) offensive tackle, Keilend Clayton (6-2, 275) defensive tackle, Nico Collins (6-5, 195) receiver,
