2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Citronelle finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Citronelle finished eighth in Class 6A region one with a 1-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The defense allowed a team record 428 points last season. The Wildcats have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2008 season and would love to end that streak this year. Citronelle was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Wildcats want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.1 points a game. Citronelle struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 42.8 points a game. The Wildcats would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Citronelle has gone a combined 18-42. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 5A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Citronelle has managed to compile a record of 128-140. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 5A and 205th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are led by head coach Russell Funk who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Citronelle. The Wildcats saw improvement from a 1-9 record the season before coach Funk arrived. The Wildcats have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Funk. Coach Funk's overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 57-38 (60.0%). Over the course of his career, Coach Funk's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times and won four region championships. Coach Funk won a state championship at Marion County in 2011. The Citronelle Wildcats will play in Class 5A region one during the 2016 season. The Wildcats may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 6A to 5A. They will compete in region one this year. It will be an uphill battle for the Wildcats if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. After just 2 wins last year, Citronelle will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Wildcats open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent McIntosh on Friday, August 26 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the McIntosh Demons finished with an overall record of 1-7 and in sixth place in Class 1A region one. Citronelle and McIntosh have met a total of 20 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 18-2-0 record against the Demons. They last met in 2013 with Citronelle winning by a score of 54-34. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
